A home loan modification may be the solution for you if you have income but are having trouble paying your mortgage.  There are loan modification "experts" popping up all over the place.  It is unregulated and virtually anyone can do it.  In fact you can do it yourself so why would you pay for it?  Call your lender.  Look at the phone number on your payment stub, call, and ask for the department that handles loan modifications.  Call customer service.  If you have to, Google your lender.  For example Google Wells Fargo customer service.  Don't Google Wells Fargo loan modification or you will get a bunch of people who are charging to do loan modifications.  Call customer service and tell them you are having trouble with your payments and you need to talk to someone and they will direct you to their help department.

Will a loan modification help?  Well yes if you are planning on staying in your home for a long time.  But if you are out of work, going to be out of work, need to move, it probably will not help.  Up to now a large percentage of people who got loan modifications are again in default.
